I have been asked this question several times lately. And I could not scream my answer loud enough: YAY!!!!!
I will admit that I wasn’t always of this opinion. I was apprehensive for a couple of reasons: They might get in my way… They could slow me down… They have a photographer so it’s covered… Right?! Wrong! It took working with some incredibly talented professionals to change my mind completely. Just like any vendor in the wedding industry, research must be done on the videographer that is right for you.
If they are super cheap (very bad sign: video editing, just like photography editing, takes a lot of work and many time consuming hours. If they aren’t charging you for it, they probably aren’t doing it or at the very least not doing it well), if you found them on craigslist or if you just can’t seem to find any examples of their work, you might want to steer clear.
Good signs are great reviews and lots of examples of excellent work. Second step is have a chat with them! Are they personable? Do you click? Are they someone you would like to spend your wedding day with? This is also very important. It’s your big day and you wouldn’t want to spend it with people you don’t get along with.
So why do I think a videographer is essential to your wedding? As beautiful as your photographs will be, I can not capture your voices when you recite your vows, your fathers words when he greets your guests and blesses your union, your brother who sang your first dance song, or as we had last weekend, the rap about your love story your maid of honor surprised you with. Just like you would do with your wedding album, you will want to relive those moments from time to time and be able to pass them along to your future generations.
